Dons defensive duo set to bring New Year's cheer

Defenders Will Nightingale and Cheye Alexander remain on course to strengthen our first-team squad for a busy start to January.

The pair continued to make progress with their returns from injury at the training ground this morning.

“The lads are happy, they’re outside, they’re doing everything and they’re not far away to contributing to the performances that the team have been delivering recently,” said our first team physiotherapist Tim Maynard.

Our cameras were at the session, with the duo now poised to be passed over to Head of Sports Science Chris McConnell as they step closer to being back in contention for Mark Robinson with a very hectic schedule at the start of 2022.

“Cheye is doing well at the moment,” said Tim. “We’re starting to test his ankle. He’ll probably be with me again on Thursday, and then I’ll look to hand him over to Chris on Friday. Then we’ll look to see where we go with him from a fitness perspective. There’s potential he could be looking around Christmas, maybe New Year. Currently his ankle looks great.”

You can see Tim Maynard’s full update on Cheye Alexander below, via the link to our official YouTube channel.

“Will is well ahead of schedule,” said Tim “The knee is all good, the ankle just needs a little bit more time. I anticipate handing him over to Chris some time next week, but he’ll need a good, solid ten days or two weeks with him before he’s ready. If he figures around those Boxing Day or New Year fixtures – that would be incredible, but I think that’s a real long shot.”
