Robbo: There’s a real understanding now

Our Head Coach on facing League One high-flyers Wycombe

Mark Robinson has praised the backing from our supporters after a very encouraging run of form.

The Dons head to the home of promotion contenders Wycombe on Saturday with confidence high after four matches unbeaten, including an impressive midweek victory at Accrington.

Speaking ahead of the match at Adams Park, our Head Coach said: “In the home end at the last cup game I could hear different songs, it was like they were willing us to do well, even in the moments when we were struggling a bit. On Tuesday night it was exactly the same – everyone is understanding what we want to achieve together and that no road is smooth.

"As always, we’ve got to give them something to be excited about. We’ve got to show that aggressiveness off the ball, and it’s just about us being all in it together. There’s nothing more powerful than everyone coming together with one cause.

“There’s a real understanding now of what we are trying to do, which is important when you are trying to build something. You need clarity throughout and it’s important as a fans club that everyone understands what we are aiming to achieve.

“I feel that we are in a really good place, both on and off the pitch, to kick on. I feel that the players are taking a massive degree of ownership, which is vitally important for me in terms of where we want to go. I think there have been very few poor performances, though there have been moments when we’ve not been where we want to be.”

Facing a Wycombe side currently joint top of League One, Robbo is under no illusions about the size of the task facing the Dons on Saturday.

“They are a very mature side with lots of know-how, and I think the average age of their squad is 30, so they are at a completely different end of the scale to us. With that they’ve got loads of experience and a fantastic manager who has done a great job for many years. Following on from the Accrington game, it is going to be the ultimate test to see if we can put in another mature performance, particularly off the ball, and then stamp our authority on the game."

Our Head Coach felt that a real step forward was made in midweek with the manner of performance that achieved victory in Lancashire.

“The reason I felt excited by the performance on Tuesday was because in that type of game there are so many opportunities to make mistakes and poor decisions," added Robbo. "I felt that the players showed a really good level of maturity in their decision-making. It was the sort of game when you make one pass too many, misplace a pass, or your technique goes because the ball was coming back the other way with the wind.

“We did all the things needed on the day, including that recognition of when to play and when to clear our lines, and we had the communication levels in terms of taking responsibility. On Saturday we will be coming up against a team that do what they do brilliantly. We are going to need all of the characteristics we showed at Accrington to get a positive performance.

“On Tuesday night it felt like they were taking everything on board in terms of ownership and it felt like a step forward, but the players need to show that they are working towards these things becoming permanent traits in their play.

“They are realising how important it is to play off a structure. They know I will give them the freedom to make their own decisions and be exciting, but you still have to play off a structure. I think we’ve reaped the rewards from that, hence the number of goals we’ve been scoring.”

We will wear our red away kit for the match at Wycombe.
