Nick on improving the squad during transfer window

Assistant Manager interviewed ahead of Portsmouth match

18 January 2021

Nick Daws said that the management team are working hard to identify the right targets during the transfer window, but he believes there is already a strong squad in place for the rest of this season.

Speaking from the training ground today, our Assistant Manager said: “Progress in this period is a difficult one because you are generally competing for the same players, you seem to take one step forward and then a step back, so we will just continue to work on it.

"We will look at the areas of the pitch that we need to strengthen and if an opportunity comes along to bring in a good player, a player that will improve the first-team, I know we’ve got support to do so, which is a great position to be in. I think it’s slightly different from this time last year in terms of our need for certain key areas, which didn’t happen. I think the squad is strong and in a much healthier position than it was then, in terms of energy and fitness. It’s going to take a good player to tempt us and bring him into the squad, but we continue to work on it.”

Despite recent results, Nick retains plenty of belief in the current squad.

"They are good players, and that has not changed. There are going to be ups and downs in performances, and in the consistencies of those performances, but we are in a strange season when squads are going to change, and the strength of the squad has to come to the fore. We have got players coming back into the building who have been injured, including Luke O’Neill, and we’ve missed him.

“We’ve had a spell when we’ve had a few players out and they are coming back, but fundamentally it is a good squad of players and whatever team is picked we feel it is good enough to win any game in this league."
