Our unique story earns praise in Parliament!

A fantastic speech by Siobhain McDonagh

14 June 2021

Local MP Siobhain McDonagh wore our colours with pride in Parliament this evening as she told an all-party debate how AFC Wimbledon is a shining example of how football should be run.

Wearing her beloved Dons shirt, Siobhain delivered a brilliant speech about our club and how our fans have turned it into a power for good - on and off the pitch. "When a club is truly fan led, the results for the community can be truly remarkable," she said.

MPs were debating football governance in the wake of the European Super League fiasco and Siobhain kicked off her speech by reminding them what happened to our club when it was under private ownership.

She triggered howls of delight as she reminded everyone about our historic FA Cup Final win over Liverpool - but then explained how we were betrayed by an FA Commission.

"Our club was stolen 60 miles up the M1 - an event that shook sport and, just like the super league, exposed the heightened commercial world of football," she said. "And so began one of English football's greatest stories - the birth of fan-owned AFC Wimbledon, according to an FA Commission a club that was not in the wider interests of football. How wrong they were.

"A democratic supporters' organisation, the Dons Trust, now owns AFC Wimbledon, giving fans control of the future of our club and - after six promotions in 13 seasons - we soared our way to League One, coming an awful long way from the open trials on Wimbledon Common when a team was cobbled together to face Sutton United just a few weeks later.

"Our dream was now real."

Finally, Siobhain told MPs about the incredible work carried out by our inspirational Dons Local Action Group. She continued: "Throughout the pandemic, The Dons Local Action Group - a 2,000-strong volunteer group of AFC Wimbledon fans, expertly led by Xavier Wiggins, honoured in the Queen's birthday list - have distributed hundreds of thousands of food boxes and lap tops and tablets across south London.

"A club that gives its heart and soul back to the community in which it belongs."
