Ayoub targets more after winning League One vote

Dons academy graduate earns deserved recognition

5 May 2021

Ayoub Assal played a key part in our charge towards safety during April – and he’s been named as the runaway winner for a player of the month award.

With 63 per cent of the vote, the 19-year-old attacking talent was the overwhelming choice for the Football League World’s award for League One.

But Ayoub is not one for resting on his laurels – and he’s determined to prove that this is just the start for him.

“It’s a great achievement for me,” said Ayoub. “I’d like to thank my family, friends, and the fans. Hopefully, there will be many more to come if I keep working hard. It’s credit to Robbo for giving me the opportunity to play at first-team level, but it’s also great for the academy as it shows that we have talented coaches and we are capable of bringing players through our youth system and into the first-team.

“Since Robbo came in as manager we are playing with more freedom in the final third. The fluidity of the formation has helped a lot and and that’s why I think we’ve scored so many goals. I can’t wait to play in front of our fans when they return to Plough Lane, especially with the style of football that we are playing. We are playing attacking football and that’s what gets fans to buy tickets to come and watch us. We want to entertain our fans by playing good football.”

Ayoub struck three goals for the Dons last month, and claimed two assists, to show his attacking talent. His display at Accrington Stanley in our 5-1 win was a real stand-out performance and the highlights are well worth watching again!
