“We’ve got to keep setting standards high”

Defender wants more than battling against relegation

2 May 2021

Will Nightingale was quick to target a much higher league position for Wimbledon next season after we retained our League One status for 2021/22.

The home-grown centre-back, who has been with us since the age of eight, has played a part in keeping the club at this level since promotion in 2016, but he wants more than battling relegation every season.

Speaking after the 3-1 defeat at home to Portsmouth, Will said: “I’m obviously over the moon with that (staying in League One). We knew that’s what we wanted, first and foremost, but I think all of us will be disappointed with how we’ve done it. We had gone six matches unbeaten before this and we did great work to get here. We wanted to extend that until the end of the season. We set ourselves high standards and that’s how we are going to get better, it’s what we will do – we will get better.”

The four-match winning streak in April was achieved with swashbuckling attacking play and 18 goals were scored in our last seven matches. Will believes it shows that Robbo and the squad can produce an entertaining brand of football for our supporters when they get the chance to cheer on the team at Plough Lane.

“The fans deserve to watch good football and that’s what we are striving to produce – it is what Robbo wants. We want to get fans excited by what we are doing. That’s our aim and we are going to get better.

“Everyone wants to be fighting for the top spots, we want to be doing what they (Portsmouth) are doing, and to do that we cannot be happy coming away with a loss. We are over the moon to be staying up, but we’ve got to keep setting standards high.”
