Dons tame Lionesses to make FA Cup progress

Manager Kevin Foster on his side's hard-fought win

Perseverance paid off for AFC Wimbledon Ladies on Sunday as two goals in the final 10 minutes secured a place in the second round of the Vitality FA Women’s Cup.

Made to work hard by a resolute Millwall side, the Dons earned a hard-fought 2-0 away win, thanks to goals by Katie Stanley and Emily Donovan.

Manager Kevin Foster said: “We knew how they would set-up, but they made it difficult for us. They were lively and energetic and they made it tough, especially in the first-half. We spoke about trying to get the ball down and play, but we didn’t quite do it, and that’s credit to Millwall.

“In the last 20 minutes they started to tire and we started to get our heads around it a little bit. It was a great finish from Katie Stanley and a good cross from Chewey (Rebecca Carter), and a great run from Emily, to get us over the line.

“We’ve had two Sundays off in the past month, which doesn’t help when you want to get that consistency, but the girls are excited about the game on Wednesday. They are enjoying their football and we will just see how we get on.”

Victory on Sunday resulted in another away draw in the competition with the Dons facing Hashtag United FC Women in the second round. Next up though is a league game at Actonians on Wednesday night, before a trip to London Bees in the County Cup.

There will certainly be no shortage of confidence after the win against Millwall made it seven successive victories. In what was always going to be a tough game against a combative Millwall side, the Dons dominated from the first minute. Despite Wimbledon having 15 first-half shots, somehow the game was goalless at half-time.

The pressure was maintained in the second-half, but a resilient Millwall side were kept in the game by their goalkeeper on numerous occasions. The breakthrough finally came for the Dons with 10 minutes to go when a fine finish from Katie Stanley gave the Dons a deserved lead. Rather than sitting back, Wimbledon kept pushing forward and reward came in the 90th minute when substitute Emily Donovan converted after an excellent cross from the right hand side by Rebecca Carter.
