Report expected to drive the force for sweeping changes

The Dons Trust has been at the forefront of Fair Game campaign

Former sports minister Tracey Crouch’s fan-led review has spent hundreds of hours listening to clubs, supporters, the FA and stakeholders.

Her report will be made public this week when she is expected to recommend sweeping changes in the game’s governance - and, crucially, the appointment of an independent regulator.

"This week promises to be transformational for football,” said Dons Trust co-chair Xavier Wiggins.

The Trust has been a driving force behind the creation of Fair Game, an alliance of over 30 clubs demanding fundamental changes in how football is run and financed.

“Fair Game was born out of a Dons Trust meeting,” added Xavier. “It now has 31 clubs,  supported by over 40 world-renowned experts,  looking to deliver realistic long-term solutions to football’s problems - such as financial sustainability and protecting the heritage and traditions of our clubs.”

Crouch’s interim report has already triggered considerable optimism and clearly showed she has tackled the core issues closest to Fair Game’s hearts. She wrote: “Football clubs are not ordinary businesses. They play a critical social, civic, and cultural role in their local communities. They need to be protected.

“The dangers facing many clubs across the country are very real with their futures precarious and dependent in most cases on the willingness and continuing ability of owners to fund significant losses.

“When this is multiplied by poor financial controls, reckless behaviour by owners and an unwillingness of the authorities to intervene the results are clear – as can be seen from the recent fates of Bury and Macclesfield. Historic and much loved clubs going under. Loyal fans bereft and communities decimated.”

Xavier added: “Tracey Crouch’s interim report was promising and we believe we are now on the cusp of something brilliant.

"It took in most of Fair Game's calls and suggestions and we’re looking forward to reading the final version. Let's hope our politicians step up to the plate and deliver."
