Ben salutes fans after ‘eye opener’ for young squad

Experienced defender on our gallant defeat at the Emirates Stadium

Ben Heneghan praised our fans for providing great support at the Emirates Stadium last night – and he believes that there’s much to come from our young squad.

Speaking shortly after the final whistle, the experienced defender said: “The fans were brilliant and we kind of expect it because that is the standard they’ve set. We can’t thank them enough, it brings us on so much, and hopefully it continues.

“I’m obviously disappointed, but when you are playing against a class side like that it’s going to be a tough night. We wanted to come here and express ourselves, and I think we did that in some parts, but we didn’t create as many chances as we would have liked.”

Ben added that our young players will really have benefited from the experience of taking on top-class opposition, and he was keen to look forward to our next challenge – Shrewsbury away on Saturday.

“We had some good spells, but we didn’t really challenge them enough. We’ve got an expectation of ourselves, but we were playing against top opposition. The lads will have enjoyed the experience.  It’s an eye-opener of the difference in the levels, and now we’ve got to shift our focus to Saturday and the league.

“As a young player, you want to showcase your ability, and some of the lads did that tonight. There’s a lot to come from this group, and we are looking forward. I’m always going to be disappointed if we get beaten 3-0, but it was an experience.”
