A rare defeat ahead of cup final

Next up for our women is the FAWNL Plate Final

19 April 2022

Our women’s first-team suffered a first league defeat since August on Sunday.

Kevin Foster’s side went into the game at Norwich without captain Hannah Billingham, Kelly Highman and Steph Mann and a 1-0 loss was the outcome.

It was not the ideal preparation for the Dons ahead of a vital match – the FAWNL Plate Final against Nottingham Forest.

The game at Norwich got off to a scrappy start, but then it appeared that the Dons were starting to control the game, albeit lacking the composure that has defined the season so far. With half an hour on the clock, the hosts struck what turned out to be the winner and Wimbledon lacked a cutting edge before the break.

The second-half followed much the same fashion with Wimbledon taking shots from long range to force the Norwich keeper into action, without looked like scoring. There were positives for the Dons though as Remmi Gardner and Olivia Clement both came off the bench to make their league debuts.

First team coach Andy May said: “Firstly, credit to Norwich as they had a game plan to get a result that they needed and they made things difficult for us. At the same time, that was not a performance we are proud of as we didn’t do the basics or reach the standards, tempo or intensity, that we’ve set this season.”
