A ‘fantastic’ response – and still time to answer the call!

Volunteers have played an important part in our rise

4 August 2022

Following a hugely positive response to our recent call-out, volunteers once again stepped forward to carry out important jobs on the opening day of this season.

We are very grateful to all of our volunteers and your ongoing support can play a big part in helping the Dons to a successful season – both on and off the pitch.

Since reformation in 2002, our volunteer base has been the envy of clubs around the country, helping to lift us back into the league and to a new stadium in Wimbledon.

Our Volunteer Liaison Officer Rick Thomas said: “We had a fantastic response to our recent call-out for more volunteers. It was wonderful to hear from so many fans willing to volunteer for the Club, both on matchdays and in midweek at the stadium. It really shows what this club is all about – overcoming the odds thanks to our unique fanbase.

“We had volunteers of all ages stepping up for various jobs, including operating the scoreboard, media duties, and selling programmes and tickets. We even had younger members of our fanbase stepping forward to be ball boys/girls. We always need more help, so if any of our fans can answer the call for a variety of jobs, including selling Golden Goals tickets, or assisting at the training ground/stadium, it would be a real help to us.”

Our Interim Chair Mick Buckley added: “Volunteers have always been an integral part of our culture and whilst It’s natural that some of our long-standing volunteers are coming to the end of their stint, it’s great to see the next generation coming through. The work they are doing is enormously valued and appreciated. If you think it’s something that could work for you, please get in touch with Rick."

Below is a list of volunteer jobs that we need help with during 2022/23, so please let us know if you can make a real difference this season.

Ticket sellers

Duties: To sell tickets to home and away fans on match days, including operating card readers. Training provided.

(Hours: 12.45 pm onwards on Saturdays and from 5.45pm for midweek games)

Women’s team

Various posts including Ticket sellers, stewards (willing to be trained to NVQ level). Back up PA announcer (needs to bring own music, and be willing to be trained in operating scoreboard).

Volunteer to work with the girls and local little league to organise Ball Boys/Girls for every home game.

(Hours: Sunday afternoons at Plough Lane or Carshalton pitches).

Ball Boys/Girls

AFC Wimbledon fans (14-17 years) who attend games on afternoons and evenings. The plan is to have a big squad so new volunteers don’t have to be ready for every game, but it's expected that you would attend at least six games per season.

You will be part of a team; training will be offered on how to keep the game running smoothly when the ball goes out of play. There will be guidance, so that you are briefed and ready to carry out your role.

Matchday gate steward

Duties: To sign-in catering staff/ match stewards at main gate.

(Hours 8.00 am -12.00 noon Saturdays, Tuesdays 3.00pm - 7.00pm)

Stadium team (midweek jobs)

Duties: Volunteers wanted to join the midweek stadium general upkeep team. There are no fixed tasks - the role is variable in nature. No special skills are required, but being able to work as part of a friendly team is all you need. Basic DIY skills could be useful at times, but are not necessary.

(Hours: Midweek during the day)

Programme sellers

Duties include selling programmes, handling cash and operating card readers

(Hours: 12.30pm on Saturday and 6.00 pm midweek games)

Ground staff/pitch team

To provide assistance to the Club’s full-time ground staff, helping to ensure that the pitch is kept in prime condition for matches. Training will be provided.

(Hours: Saturdays from 10.30am until 6.30pm, 5.30pm until 11.00 pm on Tuesday matchdays).

Training ground assistance

Help required at the training ground. The main role will be to help with watering the pitch. Volunteers will be needed daily and for a couple of hours a time. Ideally, to visit the training ground in the morning, then back again in the evening to shift the water.

(Hours: A couple of hours a day)

Golden Goals Team

Required to sell Golden Goal tickets to fans before games on Saturdays. Will be required to handle cash, operate card reader.

(Hours: 1.30pm till 2.45pm)

We would be very grateful for any help you can provide for the rest of this season. If you are interested in any of these roles, please contact Rick Thomas by e-mailing volunteerofficer@afcwimbledon.ltd.uk  .
