Johnnie: It’s really frustrating

Manager sums up eventful draw

The gaffer was naturally disappointed at the end of today’s 2-2 draw with Doncaster Rovers as the Dons let what appeared to be a commanding lead slip.

Nathan Young-Coombes was on course to take all the credit on Saturday as the substitute’s two goals put us on course for a second league win of the campaign before disaster struck as the visitors scored two late goals to earn a share of the spoils.

Reflecting on the game, Johnnie couldn’t help but express his frustration after seeing his side walk away with less than what they deserved after what was a near complete performance.

“We got ourselves into a really strong position to win the game by scoring two really good goals,” he said. “Then we had a really poor five minutes which let them back in. It’s really frustrating.

“Obviously we didn’t score against Gillingham (in midweek) but you’re always leaving yourself open. It was different today because we had the cushion of two goals but we didn’t see it through.

“We’re three games in and we’re unbeaten in the league. It’s a decent start but we would have liked more points.”

Young-Coombes had the desired impact as he came on in the second period and our manager was keen to point out how pleased he was with the striker’s finishing.

“Nathan has been great since he came in. He’s had to bide his time in order to wait for opportunities. He’s been excellent. Strikers always know that there’s a chance that they’ll come onto the pitch and he impacted the game really well.”

Whilst Johnnie also reserved special praise for Ayoub Assal, who was named Man of the Match for what was arguably one of his best displays in a Wimbledon shirt.

“The lad was outstanding. I’m pleased for him and you can tell that he’s enjoying his football. We’re really happy with him and his form.”
