Mixing it with the big boys

Striker eyes cup tie

8 August 2022

David Fisher was in confident mood on Monday afternoon after being named in the squad away to Hartlepool United.

The youngster has impressed our coaching staff in training and was rewarded for putting in the hard yards at the weekend as he made the bench for the first time in his senior career.

Despite not being introduced at the Suit Direct Stadium, David spoke fondly of the experience of travelling up north with his teammates.

“I found out on the Thursday,” he explained. “Rob (Tuvey) had a chat with me and told me that I would be travelling up. It gave me a feeling of excitement because I knew that I had begun to get my foot in the door.

“It was a good experience as I got to understand how everything functions. I’m now just waiting for my chance to get out on the pitch and show the gaffer what I can do.”

With that thought in mind and with tomorrow’s cup tie with Gillingham fast approaching, the striker is understandably keen to set his sights on getting some minutes under his belt – potentially in a competition that he holds in high regard.

“It’s a competition that I’ve never played in before,” he said. “I played in the FA Cup and FA Trophy during my time in non-league but in the Carabao Cup you’re playing against the big boys – real full-time teams not part-timers. I’m hopeful that I get to experience it.”

Up to now, David’s pre-season has been interrupted by injury, meaning that the Academy product has had to put in extra hours to get back fit.

The frontman is now looking to get back to displaying the type of form which earned him rave reviews during his successful loan spell with Hampton & Richmond Borough.

“I was with Hampton last season and the season before that. I really enjoyed it – the boys there are class. I want to say thanks to them for allowing me to play and show what I’m about.

“I was buzzing for pre-season. Unfortunately I picked up a hamstring injury at the start which put me out for about four or five weeks but that’s how football is sometimes. I’m just looking to hit the ground running by getting those minutes on the pitch when I can.”
