Johnnie: Fans’ dedication is unbelievable

Manager looks back on tonight’s defeat

21 December 2022

Johnnie Jackson was full of praise for our supporters after they backed our squad all the way in tonight’s Papa John’s Trophy loss to Plymouth Argyle.

A pulsating game finished up 3-3 after normal time after Kyle Hudlin’s double and a well-worked Ayoub Assal goal was cancelled out by a Sam Cosgrove hat-trick – with the match being decided on penalties.

Ultimately, it ended in disappointment for the Dons, but the gaffer was only too quick to praise the effort that was put in by the 56 supporters who made the ling trip to Devon.

“I’d like to thank all of the fans who came tonight. It was unbelievable support on a Wednesday night before Christmas”, said Johnnie. “I had a chance to say thank you to a few of them in person before the game, so if I didn’t see you I apologise for that. I’m disappointed for them.

“At the same time I’m really proud of the boys because of the effort they put in. We’ve had sickness going round the camp this week. I had to send four lads home this afternoon because they came down with flu overnight. We were on our last legs in terms of our energy, there were lads out there that weren’t feeling great.

“We tried to pick a team that would give us as much as they could from the off. We were magnificent in that first-half. Unfortunately, we couldn’t keep it up and it showed in the second-half. We came up against a really good team and we took them all the way. Penalties is always a lottery.”

Our manager certainly saw plenty of pleasing aspects of our performance in the first 45 minutes and even admitted that it will come into his thinking ahead of our Boxing Day League Two clash against Newport County.

“We posed them a real threat in that first-half and they ended up changing their shape to combat that. We scored some great goals and Kyle was a threat all evening. Courtney (Senior) and Ayoub (Assal) produced some brilliant bits of play through one-on-one situations. I saw some great stuff tonight that has given me food for thought.”
