Johnnie: Pivotal moment swung it our way

Manager’s thoughts after last-gasp win

30 December 2022

Johnnie Jackson felt his AFC Wimbledon side did well to ride out the storm as we came away with a priceless 2-1 victory over Colchester United.

John Akinde’s penalty had threatened to derail our unbeaten league run before late goals from Josh Davison and Ethan Chislett turned the game on its head in stunning fashion.

The gaffer pointed to a particular moment in the second-half when asked if he could see the win coming when we were behind.

“I always felt we were in the game,” said Johnnie. “It was an important period (after conceding), they were unlucky not to go two up when they hit the post – it was a pivotal moment. We were under the cosh but by staying in the game it gave us that platform.

“To win the game in that fashion – it’s always nice to grab late winners, especially at the end where our supporters were. You can’t beat that feeling. I’m delighted with the performance as a whole.”

George Marsh came into the midfield for this game, with Kyle Hudlin dropping to the bench – a decision that our manager highlighted as important during this stage of the season.

“Marshy has been pushing hard in training and showing that he’s ready. Kyle played back-to-back games. They’re coming thick and fast, I think it’s important that we utilise our squad. You don’t want to make wholesale changes to the team.”

It was also a big night for Paul Kalambayi, with the centre-back clocking up a century of games in yellow and blue – achieving the same feat as Alex Woodyard and Nik Tzanev did against Newport County.

Johnnie was quick to praise the form that the 23-year-old has shown since being handed his chance in October.

“I’m really pleased for Paul. It’s a great achievement to play 100 games for any club. Him and Ryley (Towler) have a rock solid partnership at the back. He bided his time for his opportunity and when he got it, he grabbed it. That’s how I work – if I give you the shirt, it’s up to you to make sure that no one can take it off you.”
