Ten unbeaten after last-gasp strike!

A comeback victory

29 December 2022

Ethan Chislett’s strike snatched all three points at the death as the Dons came away as 2-1 winners over Colchester United.

After falling behind to John Akinde’s penalty our side rolled up their socks and showed another glimpse of true Wimbledon spirit to clinch a comeback victory that was started by Josh Davison’s bullet header.

From the equaliser onwards it appeared that only one side would win it, with Chislett eventually bundling home as the added time board was being readied – much to the delight of our vocal supporters!

This result extends our unbeaten run and keeps us well and truly in the hunt for the Sky Bet League Two play-off places.

Johnnie Jackson made one change to the side which drew 1-1 with Newport County as George Marsh came in for Kyle Hudlin who dropped to the bench. Meanwhile Paul Kalambayi reached a century of appearances for the Dons.

The first-half an hour was quiet to say the least, with only Harry Pell testing Kieran O’Hara with a daisy cutter close to the area. Most of our best play came down the right-hand side with Chislett and Huseyin Biler combining well.

Ayoub Assal was crowded out in the area after collecting a good cross by Biler as half-time approached. Nik Tzanev was then called into action for the first time as he palmed a Tommy Smith header over from a corner before the break came and went.

Colchester then took the lead five minutes into the second-half as Tzanev was adjudged to have fouled Samson Tovide following a ball over the top. Akinde stepped up and tucked home the resulting penalty.

Akinde then hit the inside of the post as the hosts pressed for a second, before Davison headed an effort into the hands of O’Hara up the other end.

Our number nine wouldn’t be denied twice however as he headed home an Assal cross for the equaliser following another quick free-kick routine. Chislett and Biler then tested O’Hara from range as we began to get into our stride.

We then took the lead just south of the final minute of normal time as Chislett smashed home a rebound after Biler’s long range effort was saved. Ryley Towler then hacked the ball off the line as the U’s pushed for a late equaliser.

It proved to be in vain though as we held out for a last-gasp victory which takes us to 10 league games unbeaten.
