New striker Sam Cosgrove is already feeling the benefits of fan power, from only his second home game against Sunderland.

“The fans are imperative here,” said Sam, having made his home debut against Rotherham in midweek at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The forward completed a deadline day loan move from Championship club Birmingham City.

“I’ve only been here for a couple of weeks, but I can tell how much they love the club and how much the team, the staff and the club love the fans. They were fantastic today.

“It was packed out, obviously there were a lot of away fans, but I thought our fans were magnificent. When they come in their numbers and they’re loud - they really spur us on. It was a great game to be a part of.”

Things are also taking shape on the pitch for the giant striker, as he stepped up his fitness levels by completing just under 80 minutes in the 1-1 draw with the promotion contenders.

“It’s not just Ayoub and Jack,” said Sam. “But the other boys that were in behind me were brilliant. They work so hard for the team and create chances.

“It was always going to be a tough game. Sunderland are on a bad run of form, but they’re always going to be a top side. It was tough, but we more than stood up to the challenge and if any team was going to win the game it was going to be us.

“The crowd played their part, it was a spicy game, it was enjoyable, there were tackles flying in and it was competitive. Some of the cards were a bit harsh, but that’s just part of the game. We should have had two penalties today.”
