Big Ben issues a Wimbledon call to arms

"We've got to show what we're about."

Skipper Ben Heneghan has issued a call to arms to the squad ahead of home games against Rotherham and Sunderland this coming week.

“We need to have more about us,” said Ben, after he’d levelled the scores in Saturday’s defeat at Charlton.

The Dons face leaders Rotherham on Tuesday and fourth place Sunderland next weekend at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, and the big centre-back is keen that we learn fast having missed out on points from the South London derby.

“It’s a tough week, but every week is in League One,” said Ben. “We’re up against it and we’ve got to show what we’re about. We need to have that fight and belief, so that we take it to teams. Hopefully we’ll start doing that on Tuesday.

“I want to keep clean sheets. When we do get a lead, we need to realise what we need to do to hang on to that. This is the real thing! We’ve got the quality in the squad, to go and get the three points, to go and get the wins, to have the structure – it just all needs to click.

“To concede three set plays – that’s not us. For that to happen is so frustrating. We need to build on that - 100 per cent.”

Even though Ben scored to make it 2-2 at The Valley, he could still see room for improvement after his fourth goal in Wimbledon colours.

“It was about time I scored,” said Ben. “Hopefully I can get a few more as well. Ideally, I want those clean sheets and I want us to be winning games.

“We died off towards the end. We did have a good few chances. To be honest I thought my header was looping in at the end, but we just needed to have different ways of playing. Like I say, we’ve got to see games out.”

Lancashire-born Ben had high praise for debutant and new loan striker Sam Cosgrove.

“I thought he did well on his debut,” said Ben. “He caused chaos up there. We did get in there in the first half with a good few chances, which we should have capitalised on. Sam hadn't played in a while, so he had to get the minutes in, but he’s got to build on that and I’m expecting him to last the full 90 minutes next time."
