Robbo’s clear message to the players

Head Coach interviewed after home defeat

9 February 2022

Mark Robinson last night told our squad that they must show more conviction on the ball if they want to steer clear of the League One drop zone.

Speaking after the 1-0 home defeat against top-of-the-table Rotherham, Robbo said: “We need to put this to bed quickly because it will be a completely different challenge on Saturday. A match against Rotherham isn’t going to define where we finish. You want to stand up to teams physically, like we did at Wycombe and Accrington, but I wanted us to show personality on the ball. I didn’t see that, so that’s what we need. The givens are the physical side and the work-rate, but we’ve got to get back to being confident on the ball, which we’ve shown glimpses of. That’s the only way we will get out of this.

“I said to the players, ‘you can play any system or formation, but to build momentum you have to come away with the ball more’.  You can play four or five up top, but if you don’t get hold of the ball and keep it then formations and systems go out of the window. It was about us being better on the ball in the second-half, but we got worse. We just never got going at all.

“You’ve got to have the personality to calm things down, find that first pass, come out of tight areas, and stretch them. If you don’t do that it plays into Rotherham's hands because they counter press so well and they are at you so quickly. If you don’t find that pass to get out of pressure it becomes a really long and difficult night. You need to have that composure to find a pass, sometimes that is backwards or sideways, before you go forward. We didn’t do that, we just kept going down one side, and that suited them.”

On last night’s performance, Robbo said: “I was really disappointed with the second-half. We knew what they were going to offer and how good they are at set pieces. In the first-half I felt that, without creating too much, we stood up to them well. We wanted to break on transition, hence why we played with width. They are very good at counter pressing and keeping you in one area, so we knew that we had to get our passes away quickly and get at them. I said ‘let’s be braver because this game isn’t going to define where we finish’. We wanted to get on the ball and hurt them, but it didn’t materialise. We started to lose second balls and we didn’t show enough personality on the ball to build any momentum.”
