Dons suffer Woodyard injury blow

Key midfielder ruled out and decision to be made on Will Nightingale

25 January 2022

Captain and influential midfielder Alex Woodyard could be ruled out of action for a month, following a scan on a hamstring injury.

Head Coach Mark Robinson also has a decision to make on whether Will Nightingale starts tonight’s game against Ipswich, after his return from ankle and knee injuries.

Woodyard had to come off towards the end of Saturday’s one-all draw at Burton and had a scan on Monday. Head Coach Mark Robinson updated us on the extent of the injury, following our latest training session.

“Woody could be out for up to four weeks, which is obviously a blow because of the form he has been in.

“He’s a massive influence and he’s upset. I’m just letting the dust settle with him a little bit, because I know what he’s like. Once he has got his head around the situation, he will continue to be an influence in other ways because he has a big impact on the lads.

“Will should never have really gone back-to-back games,” added Robbo. “I’ve got a choice to make on what games we leave him out for because if I don’t, what with the injury he had, there’s a risk we could lose him for longer. I just have to make a decision whether he steps out against Ipswich or at the weekend.

“What we can’t afford is to lose Will for four or five weeks again. I’ve got that decision to make. However, the boys are buoyant, and I like a bit of adversity, so we’ll be fine.

“We need to find solutions and we will find solutions, but it is a loss not having Woody there. It’s my job to make sure that we don’t drop in our performances. We haven’t lost in three now and we have looked really solid. As much as it is a loss, you have to move on quickly and deal with that adversity.”
