Ethan answers Johnnie's call

Midfielder's stunning goal set up opening day victory over Gillingham

31 July 2022

Ethan Chislett responded with the perfect answer after his new manager asked him to add goals to his game - and now he’s on a mission to find the back of the net regularly.

The skilful midfielder smashed a half-volley from outside the box to open our account for the new League Two season, in the first half of our 2-0 victory at home to Gillingham. He also made a great start to life with us almost two years ago, when he scored a season opener in the first minute at Northampton.

“I’m working on it, it’d be nice to get few more, said Ethan. “It’s my second goal on the opening day for Wimbledon. I’m really delighted. To be fair, as soon as I got the ball on the edge of the box, I kind of knew as I hit it that it was going to cause trouble. I was really pleased.”

Ethan was also quick to praise man-of-the-match Jack Currie (pictured below), who effectively sealed all three points on his league debut for the Dons with his second-half header.

“He’s top!” added Ethan. “Athletically, physically, technically, and he's mentally strong too. It’s a tough occasion, your debut, but to step up like he did was excellent. I thought that, to a man today, it was a very good team performance.

“We’ve been working on a lot of on the ball stuff. With the players we’ve got, the likes of Ayoub and Josh up front, Marshy and Paris as well in the middle, we know we can cause problems. We’ve been working a lot on off the ball, so today it paid off.

“Chris Gunter and Alex Pearce have come in and alongside Browny and Will, they’re all kind of experienced heads. I think that’s important. You’ve got the younger boys as well, but those players are very important. After we’d got the second goal, we almost passed them to death at times. Tans was excellent and his distribution was fantastic and I’m sure the back five and Tans will be happy with the clean sheet.

“The support was unbelievable, but to be fair I expected nothing less. There are a few new boys, but the likes of Jack may not have experienced it, and also Guntz and Pearcy. The fans turn up in their numbers and make a lot of noise!”
