Jack impresses in wing-back role

Academy graduate helps earn a clean sheet from pre-season finale

Jack Currie has staked his claim for the left-back spot in Johnnie Jackson’s starting line-up for next Saturday’s League Two opener at home to Gillingham.

“I love the position,” said Jack after helping us to a clean sheet, with a goalless draw in our final pre-season friendly against League One Oxford United. “I love what the gaffer and Skivo want to do with us. We’re just very comfortable and know what to do.

“Even though only one stand was open, the fans were phenomenal. You could feel the energy, they had our backs. It was just great to be back playing, getting 90 minutes, putting on a clean sheet and showing them what we’re about.

“I felt the clean sheet was very deserved. We had structure, we knew what we wanted to do, and I think we imposed that well. We put our bodies on the line, took hits, and got our reward.

“Regardless of knowing what we’re doing, it was good to have that bit of encouragement from Terry Skiverton on the touchline. He’ll tell us if something is wrong, but the main thing was that we sort of did everything that he wanted, and we need to kick on from here – it’s not done.”

Academy graduate Jack, who had a successful season-long loan at Eastbourne Borough last campaign, could also see positive signs throughout the Dons line-up.

“We were a bit unlucky with how their penalty came about,” said Jack, “You know Tans, he’s going to put his all into it and he’s good with penalties, so he knew what to do. It was pretty straightforward, no worries, and I knew he was going to make the save.

“Ayoub got involved in the second half. I think you could tell that we had a team ethic about us, all of us backing each other up. That’s something we’re looking to build on.

“The goals will come; we’ve got depth now. We’ve got four or five battling it out to get those two positions up top. It would be nice if we could get a few as wing-backs, but the strike force is shaping up really nicely.”
