Nathan eyes starting spot

Young goalkeeper relishing his chance

10 July 2022

It has been a long time coming but Nathan Broome is finally getting the minutes in a Wimbledon shirt that he has craved for so long after featuring in our game against Eastbourne Borough yesterday.

The youngster arrived at the club back in January of this year from Stoke City and is yet to make a competitive appearance, however he has now featured in our first two pre-season friendlies as he aims to make a good impression on Johnnie Jackson.

“It’s been a long time for me personally, it’s been eight months since I played properly," he explained. “I want to keep showing the gaffer what I can do. Hopefully I’m starting in the first game of the season.”

Of course Nathan isn’t the only one competing for a spot between the sticks, with his teammate and friend Nik Tzanev having held down the role of number one since breaking into the side back in 2020.

The two keepers enjoy a great relationship on and off the field and are always keen to push each other as much as possible, as Nathan explains.

“Tans has been brilliant since I came to the club. No matter what we’ll always be good mates. It’s part of the keepers’ union, you always back each other up.”

As for Saturday’s match, the shot-stopper stated that the Dons weren’t at their best but added that it is the competitive games that are where things really matter in the grand scheme of things.

“It’s tough in pre-season but we can’t make excuses as we didn’t play well enough. But three weeks today is where it matters. We’ll look to go again on Tuesday against Farnborough.”
