An 'awe inspiring' dress rehearsal!

A warm welcome to our first time visitors

11 March 2022

There was an inspiring dress rehearsal at Plough Lane recently for a group of women who will sample our fantastic matchday atmosphere for the first time on Saturday.

Our annual Women at the Game event offers an opportunity to come along to the Cherry Red Records Stadium for people to gain a taste of what live football is all about.

Set-up by the late Jacqui Forster, the idea of this annual event is to provide women with that first experience of a matchday – all in a supportive environment.

To give this year’s group a taste of what to expect, there was a ‘reconnaissance mission’ with women given a tour of facilities ahead of the big match versus Lincoln.

Amirah Rahman is a committee member for Saheli and Chai Asian Women's group, based in Kingston, and she has introduced members to all things AFC Wimbledon!

“It’s massive for these women from South Asian communities because it’s something they’ve never experienced before,” she said. "The group are just in awe really. A few of them went to Kingsmeadow before the move, but they just can’t believe what the new stadium is like in comparison.”

Our women will be joined at Saturday’s game by Lady Imps, who have a strong connection with their community, and have won awards for their work in encouraging female supporters and promoting diversity.

Women at the Game organiser Anna Slade said: “We were the only club to hold a virtual event last year, so a big thanks to the Foundation for helping with that, but this time it will be extra special with staging our first Women at the Game event at Plough Lane.”

In the build-up to the event and as part of our International Women's Day celebrations, we've been featuring interviews with women who have made a big contribution to AFC Wimbledon.
