For two decades now, it’s been a real highlight in the calendar for our sponsors every year – and a tribute to our long-running association with Sports Interactive.
Our annual match pitched together SI’s finest versus a Wimbledon XI (consisting of our other sponsors) at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, celebrating the importance of our commercial partners to our fantastic story.
“It's our 20th year for this game,” said our Commercial Director Ivor Heller. “This is a wonderful event for us to give something back to our sponsors. These guys look forward to this game all year long. We’ve just got a sponsorship renewal with a company that has come back to us after a few years - and the main reason was because they wanted to play in the sponsors’ game!”
“The match is really good fun and is played in a great spirit. Staff from South London Movers played in their first sponsors’ match and they’ve thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”
The match ended in a 5-2 victory for Sports Interactive, our shirts sponsors having first started backing us in the early days after AFC Wimbledon reformed.
Alex Bell, Operations Manager at Sports Interactive, said: “I can remember the first sponsors’ games with the car park attendant in goal and Ivor in midfield!
“This is the best way of connecting our company with Wimbledon. A lot of the team are busy and cannot get to matches, so it’s great for them to come here for this annual game, meet staff, and learn what the club is all about. They hear the story about what the club has achieved over the years, including getting back to Plough Lane, and it’s incredible.
“It’s important for us to put faces to names. We all have a few drinks afterwards and Ivor always gives a great speech. That includes letting people know the part that Sports Interactive have played in the story, which is nice for our team members to hear, particularly if they are new. We are just a small part of an amazing story, but it means a lot to come to Plough Lane and celebrate our long association with the club.”
