Armband gave Ogs a real buzz

Young defender speaks ahead of derby game

8 November 2022

In November 2021 Isaac Ogundere was struggling to nail down a regular spot amidst a managerial merry-go-round at Leatherhead – but fast forward to now and things couldn’t be more different.

The versatile full-back has not only become an important member of our current squad but also experienced the honour of being named captain for our recent game against Portsmouth.

Here the defender discusses being skipper, the season so far, and how much he is relishing our big game under the lights against Leyton Orient.

BEING CAPTAIN

I was buzzing. I found out in the meeting before the game. The gaffer and his coaching staff put their trust in me. It was a good experience. I’d been captain during my time in the Under-18s, so it was something that was familiar to me.

SEASON SO FAR

I’ve been delighted with it so far. I didn’t expect to have played in the games that I have. Especially when I think about this time last year. I could never have imagined making this much progress.

LEARNING EXPERIENCES

The results we’ve had mean that things haven’t always been easy. During the first game I felt some nerves. As a young lad it takes time to adapt to the level. Playing in front of 18 odd thousand (at Bradford City) was a great experience and it was a massive moment for me and my family.

RESPONDING AFTER WEYMOUTH

We know that our performance wasn’t good enough and we'll now be looking to improve across the board heading into the replay. We’re still in the cup and we’ve got another chance to make it right.

TAKING ON ORIENT

It’s a massive game with it being a London derby in front of another big crowd. We get told when we’re young about how important the fans are at this club. They’re always behind us no matter what and it makes playing at Plough Lane even more special.
