Ethan’s double helps Dons through

A 3-1 victory in the replay

15 November 2022

Wimbledon eventually saw off a brave Weymouth side as three second-half goals sent us on our way to place in the FA Cup second round.

A lacklustre first-half was followed up by three goals after half-time as Ayoub Assal’s opener was added to by an impressive double from Ethan Chislett after the latter stepped off the bench.

The Terras did get a deserved consolation though Brad Ash for their efforts as part of a spirited display that will no doubt serve them well for the rest of the season.

As for the Dons, our unbeaten run has been extended to eight games across all competitions as we continue to build momentum heading towards the back end of the month.

Johnnie Jackson made numerous changes to the team which drew 0-0 against Salford City with the likes of Nathan Broome, Isaac Ogundere, Alex Pearce, David Fisher, George Marsh and Assal all coming into the side. Meanwhile Huseyin Biler and Luke Jenkins were added to the list of substitutes.

The Terras were backed by a vocal travelling support and applied some early pressure, leading to a shot from Ash that Broome saved comfortably. Up the other end Assal came close to catching our former keeper Zaki Oualah out at his near post.

Weymouth then came even closer as Broome palmed an initial effort from Keelan O’Connell before Tom Blair somehow cleared the crossbar with the rebound from barely five yards out.

Biler replaced the injured Jack Currie after half an hour and quickly made an impact as his cross was headed over by Harry Pell.

Xander McBurnie then struck the top of the crossbar from distance as the Dons got away with some slack play again. Josh Davison then had a shot blocked as we looked to make a breakthrough just shy of half-time.

Nevertheless we did take the lead soon after the break as Assal found his scoring touch once again. A free-kick was taken quickly with our number 10 being played through into the area, allowing him to fire into the far corner.

Broome was then called into action again as he tipped Akheem Rose’s powerful effort over the bar with Weymouth looking to hit back straight away.

Assal was then involved again as his cross found Pell who in turn headed the ball into the path of substitute Chislett who tapped home with his first touch of the game.

Our South African midfielder then doubled his tally barely a minute later as he fired in an effort that kissed the right-hand post on its way in.

Davison then had another shot blocked as we pushed for a fourth in the final 20 minutes of the tie. However it was the visitors who would find the net next as Ash headed home at the far post.

In the end our second-half treble proved to be enough as we progress to the next round for a tie at home to National League Chesterfield.
