Johnnie: It was a real team effort

Reaction from Prenton Park

19 November 2022

Our manager saluted his players after overseeing a brilliant 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Ayoub Assal and Ethan Chislett extended our unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions as our momentum continues to build.

The two strikes were the obvious highlights but a red card for the hosts and a brilliant penalty save from Nik Tzanev made for a highly eventful game that Johnnie was only too pleased to see his players come through.

“I feel delighted for everyone involved today,” he said. “I’m proud of the way that the players dug-in. We had some tough moments in the second-half where Tranmere put us under a lot of pressure despite being a man down. We stood up to that and when we needed our goalkeeper to get us out of a little spot he did it yet again.

“It is tricky to come up against 10 men. They played very well during that period of the game. We weren’t as good as when it was 11 against 11. We defended properly today and had the spirit that I keep talking about. The clean sheet today was the result of a real team effort.”

“We scored two really good goals. They were two excellent finishes. Both of them are enjoying their football at the moment and are amongst the goals. I’m really pleased with the group and how the lads that were off the pitch supported their teammates. The supporters in the stand were incredible.”

It was also a day to remember in more ways than one for Huseyin Biler, who followed up his home debut in the midweek win over Weymouth with his first league start today.

“I’m so pleased for the lad,” said Johnnie. “He had a bad injury in pre-season which kept him out. He’s shown in the games that he’s played that he is more than capable. I had no qualms about throwing him in because of the evidence from those previous games and the way that he conducts himself in training.

“He’s a lovely lad. He’s got a good rapport with his mate (Ayoub Assal) down that left-hand side and they love playing together.”
