Loan continues to stoke Ben's fire

Young defender gaining experience with promotion-chasers

21 November 2022

Teenage right-back Ben Mason continues to gain valuable game-time with promotion-chasing Basingstoke Town, having established himself as a regular in their starting line-up.

Ben, who skippered our under-18s to the Youth Alliance South East title last season, clocked up another 90 minutes on Saturday as the Hampshire club beat Tooting & Mitcham 4-2 to climb to fourth place in the Isthmian South Central table.

Having been part of a side that earned a Team of the Week award previously, Ben’s appearance at the weekend took him to 13 in Basingstoke colours. As well as having experienced league, league cup, FA Cup and Trophy action, he’s also registered his first senior goal in a Hampshire Senior Cup game.

Ben’s loan runs until the end of January next year, having joined at the end of August. The defender, aiming to earn another call-up to a Republic of Ireland youth squad, was back at Plough Lane in midweek to watch this season’s class of young Dons make progress in the FA Youth Cup. They’ll next face a home tie against Leyton Orient.

Attacking midfielder Marcel Campbell came on for the closing stages for South Park Reigate in their 2-0 win on Saturday, their first ever at Bedfont Sports, also in the Isthmian South Central. Marcel and Ben both signed their first professional deals with the Dons at the end of June this year.

Forward Zach Robinson limped off with a tight hamstring on the hour, as Dundee continued their push for promotion from the Scottish Championship with a 1-0 victory over bottom of the table Hamilton at Dens Park.

Striker Aaron Cosgrave was on the bench for Southend United. However, the Shrimpers' decent run of form came to a halt, as they lost 3-1 at lowly Gateshead in the National League. Aaron didn’t add to his list of appearances for the Essex club.

Young goalkeeper Max Foulkes is getting regular game time with Combined Counties League Division One side Molesey. He figured in their 2-0 defeat at home to Eversley & California.
