Merseyside Mission

A look at our next opponents

18 November 2022

The last time Wimbledon played Tranmere Rovers was at the back end of 2019, with many things having changed since then.

This coming weekend our side makes the trip to Prenton Park in search of extending our unbeaten run to nine games across all competitions as momentum continues to build for Johnnie Jackson’s Dons.

Here we take an in-depth look at what we can expect from the Birkenhead outfit:

THE GAFFER

Micky Mellon has spent the vast majority of his coaching career in the Football League and returned for his second spell with Rovers back in 2021.

He previously led the club to two play-off successes in both 2018 and 2019, whilst with Fleetwood and Shrewsbury Town he also achieved various other promotions. During his playing days he turned out for the likes of Blackpool, Burnley and West Brom as a midfielder.

THE SQUAD

Elliott Nevitt and Josh Hawkes currently sit joint-top of the club’s highest scorers this term with five apiece and will no doubt provide the biggest threat to our defence throughout the afternoon. The experienced Kane Hemmings is also an attacking option that isn’t to be underestimated, with the skipper having hit the net on a regular basis throughout his career.

Meanwhile Rovers also have a host of loanees amongst their ranks including Paul Glatzel (Liverpool), Dynel Simeu (Southampton) and Luke Robinson (Wigan Athletic).

HE PLAYED FOR BOTH

Our current captain, Alex Woodyard, previously spent a short period with Tranmere in 2020 and will no doubt have his eyes set on picking up three points this weekend.

FORM GUIDE

The club sit eleventh in the League Two standings having won seven, drawn five and lost six of their opening 18 games. Meanwhile their FA Cup adventure ended quickly as Carlisle United emerged as 2-1 winners, whilst interests in the Carabao Cup were finished by Newcastle United.

Rovers’ form in the Papa John’s Trophy group stage was also patchy as they beat Crewe Alexandra (1-0), lost to Leeds United Under-21s (5-3) and drew with Bolton Wanderers (2-2).
