Johnnie: It was a massive relief

The manager sums up his thoughts

1 October 2022

Johnnie Jackson was clearly relieved at full-time today as he saluted our side for a spirited 2-1 comeback victory.

A second-half double from Josh Davison cancelled out Kwesi Appiah’s opener to get the Dons back to winning ways in League Two.

We fought off a late onslaught from Colchester United in the closing stages, leading to passionate celebrations at the full-time whistle.

“It’s a big three points for us," said Johnnie. "It was a little nervy at the end. We conceded in a couple of moments this season when we’ve been leading games – to get over the line was really important. You’ve got to stand up in those moments at the end and in some cases so does your goalkeeper and he certainly did that.

“The relief was massive. There’s been a lot of games when there hasn’t been a lot in it, so to get over the line when we weren’t at our best was brilliant. We’ve backed up a good point last week with a victory.”

Our side appeared to be out of sorts in the opening 45 minutes and as a result a big response was needed after the break to earn all three points.

Thankfully, Davison led the charge and as a result the gaffer was full of praise for his exploits.

“Josh is a lad that I’ve known for a long time and he gives you absolutely everything every time he goes on the pitch,” he said. “I knew he would be a good fit for me and this club because that’s what this club demands as well. We had two boys up top that are willing to run and chase. You’ve got to give them something to get after.

“I wanted more energy from the team. We were a little bit one-paced in the first-half. We weren’t at our best. In the second we showed that front-foot mentality that we demonstrated at Bradford. We won our duels and second balls.”

Lastly, our manager highlighted the importance of Chris Gunter and Isaac Ogundere, especially after we lost Will Nightingale and Alex Pearce to injury in the build-up.

“Gunts coming back was a big help because we lost Nightsy, who was outstanding up at Bradford. Ogs had such a good debut last week that he was always going to keep his shirt.”
