Josh: Something needed to change

Top scorer on a week of transition for the Dons

Match winner Josh Davison knows that even a week can make a big difference in football, as we put derby disappointment behind us to earn a much-needed victory at Rochdale.

We failed to impress at home to Sutton United last weekend, but it’s good to talk and after some home truths were dispensed, we picked up only our second away win in League Two this season. A goal by strike-partner Ayoub Assal and a sixth of the season from Josh was ultimately the difference in the 2-1 victory, despite the Dale pulling a goal back.

“It’s been a week of getting everyone on the same page,” said Josh. “We were in a bit of a tough spot because we weren’t getting the wins, and you want to get them as much as possible.

“We said that we needed to change something, and everyone has left everything out there. That’s what we’ve got to do for all of the games there are left, because we need to develop that consistency over the course of a season.

“We’re not going to complain about the amount of games we’ve got coming up because it's a chance to go on a run. With matches coming up Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, we can rack up the points.

“The manager has got faith in me to score goals and put in a performance for the team. If I can get the platform to do that on the pitch, I’m going to try my best and give my all in every game.”

Our record signing and top scorer will be hungry for more goals when Crewe visit the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Tuesday.

“I needed that goal,” said Josh. “It came off a clearance, I just gambled and got in and finished my dinner! It was a nice one to get, as well as the win.

“I spoke to Ayoub after he missed his first chance and he felt he’d get another one. I told him that he’d finish the next one. As soon as he got the next chance, I had all faith in him to score and he took it nicely with a little dink – there’s confidence!

“It was an unbelievable performance from Alex Woodyard. He’s not played much football since his return from injury. He’s been excellent around the building and with all of the lads. He was vocal, and it was a proper captain’s performance as he won loads of second balls and duels. It was good to have him back.”
