Facing Sutton United all the way back in 2002 is something that Joe Sheerin will never forget – and our former captain is now relishing our reunion with the U’s in League Two.
Joe fell back in love with football after joining the Dons following the trials we held on Wimbledon Common and is now set to give us his backing this weekend as we welcome him back as our guest.
He was our first captain after reformation and it will understandably be an iconic moment when he is presented to the fans who showed him such love during his time as a player.
“It’s going to be a special occasion because it’s been 20 years since the day I’ll never forget,” said Joe. “That game at Gander Green Lane signified the rebirth of the club. It will mean a lot for me to walk out before kick-off. To see how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved fills me with pride. We now have the prospect of this great local derby being played in the Football League.”
Although our ex-captain respects the achievements of our South London rivals, he was also quick to admit his surprise at seeing them rise to the same level as the Dons.
Nevertheless Joe is under no illusion as to how much this game will mean to our supporters and is hoping we come out on top.
“I never expected it! Sutton have done brilliantly over the last few years. They’ve shot up the leagues in the same way we did.
“I’ve played in these games in the past and you always get a feeling that there is a lot more on the line. It’s going to be a big day for the fans and I really hope we can take the bragging rights. The big picture of it all once again shows how far we’ve come.”
