Our Tuesday night tribute

Plans for remembering Queen Elizabeth II at our home match

11 September 2022

Dignitaries, members of parliament and public servants from across Merton will join us on Tuesday evening, as we pay our own unique tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

All 55 of our local councillors, along with council workers and our two local MPs, have been invited to attend a pre-match ceremony ahead of our game against Northampton Town.

As fans and guests arrive at The Cherry Red Records Stadium they will see the digital image currently displayed above our main entrance bearing the simple message: “In memoriam, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926-2022”.

Among our guests will be local MPs Stephen Hammond and Siobhain McDonagh, plus the council leader, Ross Garrod.

They will each be making their own one-minute recorded message, which will be played as the dignitaries take to the pitch with a floral tribute - to be placed in the centre circle five minutes before the players come out. Accompanying them will be one of our club’s four founders, commercial director Ivor Heller.

Once that ceremony is completed, the players will come out and stand together around the centre circle. At this point everyone in the ground will be asked to observe a minute’s silence.

The national anthem will then be sung in the stadium before the dignitaries take their seats for the game.

AFC Wimbledon respectfully asks everyone inside the stadium to participate in this important event at such a poignant moment in our nation’s history.
