Landmark goal heralds fresh start for Kwaku

Academy product eager for more game time

21 September 2022

Kwaku Frimpong banished a season of injury and frustration when he tucked away his first senior goal for the club.

The 19-year-old midfielder made his first start at right wing-back last night, and put distance between us and a resurgent 10-men Crawley side with our third goal in the 3-2 Trophy victory.

Having signed in the summer of 2021, Kwaku endured a stop-start first season as a professional. Now he’s determined to kick on with his progress again with the Dons in this competition, and with National League South Dartford who he recently joined on loan.

“I’m grateful to have got the goal,” said Kwaku. “It sealed the win, even though I got one for them late on! But that happens. Most importantly, I’m happy with the victory."

“We said in the changing room that we needed to come out in the second-half with energy, but we didn’t do that. However, we made a few substitutions, switched back on and got the win. That was needed. Now the boys need to push on and get more wins and get us up the league table.

“It’s good experience for me to be playing first team football in this competition, getting involved and boosting my fitness. I haven’t played 90 minutes for ages, so it’s good to do that and I’m just happy with how it turned out. Towards the end I was feeling tired, but I’m grateful for the opportunity and to get myself on the scoresheet.

“Last season had a lot of ups and downs, but this season I’m just trying to get games under my belt, push forward, be a better player and hopefully I can come back and help Wimbledon.

“Alan Dowson and Martin Tyler at Dartford are great people and great coaches. They’re always giving me good advice and pushing me, so I’m happy to be working under them, just trying to be a better player and helping them progress up the league."
