Will aims for extended stay

First interview with goalkeeper

12 September 2022

Jääskeläinen is a surname that certainly holds weight in English football but our new signing is his own man in more ways that one.

The son of former Premier League shot-stopper Jussi, Will Jääskeläinen has carved out his own reputation since rising through the ranks at Crewe Alexandra.

Playing just south of 95 games for the Railwaymen, coupled with a promotion to League One, underlines the 24-year-old’s true potential as he bids to get back on track with the Dons following his summer exit from Gresty Road.

“I was buzzing to get the call to come and train down here,” said Will. “This summer has been frustrating for me, I’ve been keeping myself fit and waiting for my agent to get a phone call. Now it’s come, that feeling (of frustration) has gone.

“There’s lots of games – Saturday, Tuesday - and you’ve got to be ready and prepare all year round as it’s a long season. I’ve played against the club a lot in the past and it has a big history. I’m here to help Wimbledon get points. I hope it lasts longer than a month.”

Ashley Bayes played a big role in bringing the Finland youth international to Plough Lane, with our charismatic Goalkeeping Coach already making him feel welcome in his own unique way.

Despite being with the club for only a matter of days, Will already feels comfortable and is taking everything in his stride.

“I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve got on well with all of the lads straight away. Bayzo and the gaffer have been class with me as well. He’s (Bayzo) brilliant. He has loads of energy and there’s only been good things from him so far.”
