Aaron: We need to go back to the drawing board

Reaction from our experienced defender

2 April 2023

Aaron Pierre is keen to make amends after defeat at home to the bottom side and with our busy Easter schedule fast approaching.

“We need to go back to the drawing board,” said the Grenada international defender, after Rochdale came away from the Cherry Red Records Stadium with all three points from a single-goal victory.

"We need to make sure that we have a clear set of minds about what we’re trying to do and to try and win every single game for the rest of this season. It was a very frustrating game and we didn’t execute our game plan, which was to keep a clean sheet first and foremost to secure a win.

“I’m not going to relay what was said by the gaffer afterwards. That’s something us as a team need to address collectively, but as a unit we are annoyed that we conceded and lost. We have to get back to what we showed on Tuesday against Walsall.”

The display was in stark contrast to that midweek win and Aaron added that the squad must face up together by taking shared responsibility so that they can move forward positively.

“On Tuesday, we were a lot more aggressive with how we approached things. We were a lot more clinical. We didn’t create as many chances as we had hoped for on this occasion, but the chances we had could have secured us the win.

“We need to take accountability of what we’re doing and to give the fans what they actually want, which is three points. That’s what we want as well. We don’t go into games looking to be passive, so we just have to make sure that we have the extra hunger to secure the win.

“I love the fact that there are loads of fans coming in to support us. They encourage us to perform. You can see that when we’re doing set-pieces and attacking that they are cheering and gearing us up to do something in the final third. We need to do more to try and make them happy.”

Aaron feels he's improving all the time after getting more game-time under his belt, having been a big problem to us previously when playing for Wycombe Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town.

Following his seventh apprearance in Dons colours, Aaron said: “I feel happy to be back playing. It’s a hard task getting back from injury and into the swing of things. I missed playing regularly and it’s very frustrating when you’re not a part of it. I’m happy to be back on the pitch and hopefully we will get more wins.

“They’re a great bunch of lads here. I know a few of them from prior to my time with Wimbledon. At the end of the day, it’s a sport that we love, so everyone has the same mindset of wanting to win games and everyone knows what to do. Hopefully, we just do more of it."
