Johnnie: It’s incomprehensible

A late loss

10 April 2023

Johnnie Jackson was almost lost for words after seeing AFC Wimbledon fall to a late 3-2 defeat at home to Salford City.

For the vast majority of the game the Dons had more than matched the play-off chasing visitors and deservedly led 2-1 heading into the closing stages thanks to goals from Kasey McAteer and Ali Al-Hamadi.

Remarkably Salford were the side which would emerge as the winners, as a late Callum Hendry double earned the striker redemption for his penalty being saved by Nathan Broome.

It was another kick in the teeth for Wimbledon, with the loss coming off the back of a similar late lapse in concentration on Good Friday as we drew to Harrogate Town.

“I’m gutted to not win the game let alone lose it,” said Johnnie. “It’s incomprehensible after the way that we played for the best part of 94 minutes. We’ve thrown it away. It’s hard to explain.

“The players have to take responsibility. You’ve got to see the job through. In the space of a minute the game has flipped on its head. We have to man up. We know what happens if we don’t take our chances because its happened before. It’s the same old story.

“I’m delighted for Kasey but it should be a goal as part of a winning performance. There’s a lot of positives that can be taken from large elements of the game but we’re walking away with nothing.”

Our manager confirmed that Aaron Pierre suffered a thigh injury, leading to the defender being substituted at half-time. Ethan Chislett missed out due to a problem with his hamstring.
