Johnnie: We were much improved

Manager’s thoughts on today’s stalemate

29 April 2023

Johnnie Jackson felt the Dons were back closer to the standards he expects after today’s 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers.

In a match between two sides that had very little to play for, it was Wimbledon who had the better of the chances as our good approach play was finally rewarded by Ali Al-Hamadi’s dinked finish.

However, Sam Taylor netted an impressive equaliser for the visitors, meaning both teams emerged with a share of the spoils.

After the game Johnnie discussed the performance, the return of Josh Davison, the absence of Harry Pell, and our End of Season awards.

Watch the full interview below.

ON THE DRAW

It was a much improved performance. I asked for a response from the lads and we got it. We deserved to win the game. We scored a really good goal and had chances to go further in front. On the back of last week it was much, much better.

It sums up our luck this season. They played the ball down the side and Hus pulled his hamstring. In normal circumstances he would’ve been out to their winger. To be fair to Tranmere, I don’t think they realised that he was injured.

ON JOSH’S RETURN

I was delighted to see Josh get through the minutes he did. It wasn’t planned for him to start the game but certain things dictated that we needed him today. I told him to give us everything he’s got.

ON PELL’S ABSENSCE

Pelly has picked up an issue again, we had to juggle the pack. DJ was tiring, he signalled that he’d run his race. Hus went down at the end there too, it’s rotten luck.

ON ALI AND JACK’S AWARDS

I’m pleased for both of them. Jack’s first full season in senior football, it’s been such a good one for him personally. It’s been a rollercoaster for him, he’s had highs and lows. He’s a great lad who wants to work hard and achieve great things in the game. We’ve given him a wonderful platform this season.

Ali came in January – you want those signings to hit the ground running. They don’t always do that in that window but he’s been a revelation. He’s added goals to his game after us seeing the potential in him. Before coming here he didn’t have a big history of scoring goals, but now he looks like a proper number nine.
