“Obvious to see we’re not far away”

Positives and negatives for Wimbledon

15 April 2023

Johnnie Jackson feels the Dons aren’t far away from getting the results our play deserves, after seeing his side lose out 2-1 to promotion-chasing Stevenage.

As with the previous encounter between the two teams, there was an even first-half as Ali Al-Hamadi’s brilliantly taken goal cancelled out Jordan Roberts’ opener.

However an unfortunate mistake from Jack Currie undone all our hard work as Jamie Reid netted what proved to be the winner half an hour from time as we fell to a second successive defeat.

Despite this our manager has urged the need for everyone to stay united as we look to address our recent downturn in form.

ON THE PERFORMANCE

Two errors have cost us. We conceded an early goal from a set piece, which we knew was a big threat of theirs. We dealt with that setback brilliantly and got ourselves back in the game. We were the better team before half-time and created the better chances.

We gave them the second goal. They haven’t had to work for it. We have to take that on the chin and take that as a team. Its unfortunately defined the football match. Jack will know he’s made an error but we will chat about how you deal with that situation better. He’s had a great season.

It’s obvious to see that we’re not far away.  We’ve had two games against Stevenage where we’ve pushed them. Tans hasn’t really had to make a save today. To come here and have your goalkeeper not have to do much shows you’re doing a lot right. I’m frustrated for everyone.

Too often we’ve moved away from what we’re doing. If you go individual you’re never going to get success. We have to stay together as a team.

ON MAKING FOUR CHANGES

I brought Tans back in today because of the threat they pose at set pieces. One of his key strengths is dealing with balls into our box. I wanted that experience on the football pitch and Broomey understood that. We’ve got two great goalkeepers to choose from.

Aaron Pierre was unavailable. We’ve now more or less got one fit, senior centre-back. Browny has had to be a makeshift today. Sam Pearson and Ethan Chislett missed out through injuries that they picked up in previous games. Armani Little has had his hamstring go inside 10 minutes. It’s unlikely we’ll see him again this season.

ON HOW ALI CAN CONTINUE TO IMPROVE

He’s getting in unbelievable positions. We’re doing tremendously well to feed him with opportunities. I want him to take his shots quicker like he did today – it was a great example of getting a yard and hitting it early. His pace and movement means he’ll always get chances.
