“The goals we conceded were criminal”

Reaction to today’s defeat

22 April 2023

Johnnie Jackson admitted the manner of Wimbledon’s 5-1 defeat to Swindon Town was nothing short of embarrassing.

After taking the lead through Aaron Pierre’s first goal for the club, the Dons quickly became masters of our own downfall as a Luke Jephcott double and Jacob Wakeling header put us 3-1 down at the break.

Swindon then capitalised on more slack defending and individual errors to increase their tally to five, with Pierre’s red card summing up our day as a whole.

Naturally our manager couldn’t shy away from criticising the performance as a whole, as he outlined his disappointment at what we’d seen today.

“It’s unacceptable,” said Johnnie. “What we saw out there today wasn’t good enough from all of us. It’s not good enough for Wimbledon Football Club. It was a real eye opener for me. There’s been some real harsh lessons learned on what we need to do and where we need to go with it.

“It’s a feeling of embarrassment. To lose a game in that manner is tough to take. To concede the type of goals we let in today was criminal. It gave us no chance of picking up a result. We handed goals on a plate to the opposition and we gave ourselves too much to do.

“The fans are fully entitled to vent their frustrations. That’s two seasons worth of frustration building up. This season has been difficult for a number of reasons. What we gave them today isn’t what they want to see and it isn’t what I want to give them.

“At the turn of the year we were a proper team and we were serving up proper Wimbledon performances. For various different reasons we were robbed of that. We haven’t had the depth of squad to cope with the injuries we sustained.

“The team from that period is what we want to give the fans. It’s the team that we’re all working behind the scenes to provide next season. We’re well ahead of where we were this time last year as far as building, recruiting and putting an infrastructure in place behind the scenes that we didn’t have before. We want to make a real go of it. We have to learn the lessons of this season.”
