Johnnie: Disappointed but positives to take

Reaction to today’s game

26 August 2023

Johnnie Jackson admitted he was disappointed not to see our side come away with all three points as we were made to settle for a 1-1 draw against Forest Green Rovers.

James Ball’s first goal for Wimbledon appeared to have set us on our way to our third win in a row before Troy Deeney scraped home an equaliser against the run of play.

Here our manager provides his thoughts on the game, updates us on the fitness of Jakes Reeves and Armani Little and looks ahead to our Carabao Cup game against Chelsea.

Watch the full interview below.

ON THE DRAW…

We’re disappointed that we haven’t won to be honest. It was a game that ebbed and flowed. We had moments when we were on top and so did they. By the end there was only one team pushing and likely to win it – I think we had some good chances towards the end. I still have to be pleased with the level of the performance.

ON THE RESPONSE TO CONCEDING…

They got the goal and their tails were up a little bit, we had to tweak our shape a little bit to try and help out the boys in midfield. It helped us to get a stranglehold on the game. We were really knocking on the door at the end there. It wasn’t to be for us in the end.

ON JAMES BALL…

Delighted for Bally. He’s had to be patient but he’s been brilliant from the sides and when he’s been called upon from the bench. He was ready to get straight into the action and picked up a goal which is fantastic for him. His all round performance, the way he roamed round the midfield and broke up play was excellent.

ON JAKE REEVES AND ARMANI LITTLE’S WITHDRAWLS…

Reevesy was just feeling his hamstring. It was disappointing as I feel it affected the game. We lost Jake in the first-half and in the second we had to take Armani off. We’ve made enforced changes that perhaps on another day would have given us a different outcome. But let’s not take anything away from the changes we did make as they all did well.

ON STILL BEING UNBEATEN FOR CHELSEA…

It’s hugely positive. I just told the lads that it’s a great first month of the season. If you had told me that we’d get to the end of August unbeaten in the league I would’ve taken it.

We’ve now got a great game to look forward to on Wednesday night. It’s not a day out, we’re not patting ourselves on the back because we get to play Chelsea. We’re not going there to just enjoy the experience, we want to go there and have a proper game against them. Hopefully we can cause an upset.

If they show up and they’re on their level, it’s going to be tough for us but if they’re below it, I know my boys will be fighting and right up for it.
