“We need to believe we can match anyone”

Another point on the board

12 August 2023

Johnnie Jackson is keen for our squad to believe we can get the better of anyone in League Two after the Dons pushed Wrexham all the way in today’s 1-1 draw.

James Tilley’s powerful second-half penalty saw us fightback for the second time in a week after Elliot Lee had put the visitors ahead in the first 45 minutes.

The result means we stay unbeaten after three games played, underlining the positive steps forward that we are taking in these early weeks of the campaign.

ON THE DRAW…

We matched them brilliantly. The first-half was a bit of a stalemate to be honest. They went 1-0 up through the deflected goal that I felt was harsh as there wasn’t anything in the game.

Second-half they came alive and we had to work our way back into the game. We were massively in the ascendency, got two penalties, one of which we took advantage of. I thought we might have gone on to win the game, but it ebbed and flowed.

The made changes which brought them opportunities, so we had to make changes to try and affect it too. In the end I would say it was a fair result. I said to the lads that I feel like we’re capable of matching anyone. We need to believe that.

ON STICKING TO THE GAME PLAN…

It was really important. We’re going to play 100 odd minutes each game, emotions are always going to be high, we have to stick to what we’re good at. That’s our shape, that’s our workrate and getting our forward and creative players on the ball.

It was a really disciplined performance against a good side who are fancied for promotion. We’re not patting ourselves on the back for that because I want our lads to believe we can match anyone.

ON THE CHANGES MADE…

We needed a stimulus in the game. People will have seen the impact that our substitutes made in the week. I’ve got options on the bench that can impact the game positively if we need to chase a goal and if we want to defend a lead. What’s great is that the lads who aren’t involved support their teammates.

ON JAMES TILLEY…

You can see by the minutes that he’s played – normally with wingers they usually get brought off – he’s a fit lad that is disciplined in the shape that we want. He’s got bundles of ability. He can create, he’s got a lovely left foot and he’s stepped up today with the penalty and put his foot through it.
