“We were clearly the dominant side”

Popular defender gives his all for the cause again

17 December 2023

Giant centre-back Joe Lewis hailed our performance at Salford City and felt that we were unlucky not to get the win.

Joe, on a season-long loan from League Two leaders Stockport County, delivered another all-action display for the Dons that have made him a crowd favourite this season.

“Possibly we should be talking about all three points, but it happens, said Joe following the goalless draw at the Peninsula Stadium - our ninth clean sheet of the campaign. “There are occasions where we may not put the chances away that we could have. That’s going to happen this season.”

You can listen to everything Joe had to say below.

“I think from our point of view, it’s a great defensive performance and a great performance as a team really. We’ve got to keep holding on to the fact that we’re playing really well and we’ve been picking up a lot of points lately and this was no different. We were clearly the dominant side and been unlucky not to come away with all three points.

“I think on a lot of occasions we’re coming to places and grinding out results - this wasn’t one of those occasions as we were clearly dominant. We had a lot of the ball, played some great football - possibly some of the best football we’ve played this season. The away form has been good and as of late the home form has as well.”

The Welshman made his 25th competitive appearance for the Dons in the North West and is prepared for a busy few weeks ahead - stretching into the New Year.

“It was a bit of a tiring one as there was a lot to do, particularly in the last half hour. That’s football at this time of the season - you rest and recover and get ready for the next game.

“The festive season is always busy, but this one in particular is pretty hectic - even by other seasons standards. We’ve got to be on it and make sure everyone is ready as the whole squad is going to be needed and it’ll be a real team effort.“

Joe also backed midfielder Armani Little and striker Ali Al-Hamadi, who’ve both been in excellent form recently but were unable to break the deadlock.

“Ali has taken 99 per-cent of his chances recently,” said Joe. “It’s going to happen - you’re going to come across a game where he doesn’t take a couple. I think his performance was outstanding - he got in the right positions and was a threat for the whole game - we win and lose as a team.

“Armani had a few chances in the first half, probably not clear-cut ones though - with the ball bobbling on the edge of the box. Again, he’s someone who has scored an absolute screamer recently and it’s going to happen on occasions this season.”
