At the double! Josh set for New Year's pay out

Eight-goal striker to treat his partner

30 December 2023

Josh Davison is finding form at the right time of the season, but having lost a bet our striker’s partner is about to enjoy a luxuriating start to the New Year!

The forward set his sights high and made a wager that he’d reach double figures by the end of the year. Despite the Dons hitting the goal trail against Colchester with Josh bagging a brace, his late rush - which took him to eight goals - wasn’t quite enough.

“I’ll take it,” said Josh. “I wanted to be on double digits. I had a little bet with my missus - I lost! I’ll treat her to a spa day or something.”

You can listen to everything Josh had to say post-match below.

Josh yet again enjoyed playing against the visitors from Essex. Last night’s double in the 5-3 victory took our sponsor’s man of the match to five goals against Colchester in Wimbledon colours, having netted three times in the two fixtures last season.

“It was a really good game,” said Josh. “I enjoyed it. It was the last home game of the year and nice to end it that way.

“Teams have spells - they had a very good spell and got two goals to go 2-1 in front, but it showed character from us that we rode it out. We showed that we can get back into games and not only win it, but go and kill it.

“The advice at the break was to keep doing what we did at the end of the first half, and we’d go on and win the game - and that’s what we did. We’ve got the three points to show for it.

With Ali Al-Hamadi off to the Asian Cup shortly with Iraq, January could be a big month ahead for Josh.

“The boy is on fire at the moment,” said Josh. “It feels like he’s always going to score - he gets more than one chance. Omar Bugiel behind us works well off of him. We know he’s going to win the ball and slot us in - it’s a striker’s delight!

“That little combination we’ve got going - I’ve been enjoying it. It’s just going to add weaponry to my game, but we know that everybody has got to step up now as it’s a squad game.

Josh wasn’t the only Wimbledon player to notch a pair on the night, with Welsh defender Joe Lewis taking his tally for the season to three goals.

“It was an unbelievable performance from him,” said Josh. “He always gets on the end of a cross. He’s a threat from corners. His assist for one of my goals was unbelievable! I was a bit surprised that it came - but I’m buzzing.”
