Johnnie: We can compete with anyone

Looking back at today’s draw

11 February 2023

Johnnie Jackson feels that today’s 0-0 against Carlisle United shows that we can match the best of what Sky Bet League Two has to offer.

The Dons went toe-to-toe with the league’s top scorers and came closer to snatching a win at the end as Josh Davison saw an effort fly off target.

Overall it was another tough test that our manager can certainly take positives from.

“I thought we ended the game really strongly,” said Johnnie. “I was thinking that if we had another five minutes we probably would’ve got a winner. The game ebbed and flowed. I thought we were dominant in the first-half but they came out in the second - and like any good team – applied pressure.

“We knew they’d have their moments but we stood up well tactically in order to get our energy back. I would’ve liked us to test the goalkeeper more in the spells where we looked bright. It’s something we’re speaking about and working on a lot.

“I told the lads that we’ve played arguably three of the best teams in the division in recent weeks. Every single game we’ve matched them and had the better moments. It shows me that my team isn’t inferior to these teams and I know my boys believe that they can compete with anyone. We have to keep believing.”

The gaffer also reserved praise for our January additions, with several players beginning to find their feet after making the move to Plough Lane.

“Everyone is settling really well. We’ve trained well and had an important friendly match down at Portsmouth. It allowed us to give some of the boys joining us a taste of what we’re about. Everyone who started and came on showed what they can bring to the party. It’s great to have the options available to us. We’re going to need them.”

Johnnie also confirmed that Huseyin Biler is set to be sidelined for up to a month with a hamstring injury.
