Johnnie: We should’ve been out of sight

Reaction to today’s draw

18 February 2023

Johnnie Jackson admitted his AFC Wimbledon side should’ve seen the win through as we drew 2-2 with Hartlepool United.

Goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and Diallang Jaiyesimi – their first in Wimbledon colours – had put us in a commanding position.

However a double from the visitors’ Dan Kemp meant the Pools came away with an unlikely point, leaving Johnnie understandably frustrated.

Watch the full interview below.

“We’re frustrated to concede so late in a game where I felt we should’ve been out of sight in terms of our dominance,” he said. “We had the better of the match but the scoreline doesn’t reflect that. I’m speaking on pure emotion but I feel we could have managed the game better than we did.

“They were always going to throw bodies forward because they were chasing a goal. We pride ourselves on not conceding goals like the second one.

“This is football, no one gives you anything. We score goals together, we concede goals together - it’s not about the defence or the forwards. We’re a team and we keep our strength as a unit.”

Goals from two of our January signings were the clear and obvious highlights of the 90 minutes, with our manager praising the duo for their exploits.

“We scored two really good goals. Ali’s was particularly pleasing because it came off the back of a lot of stuff that we’ve been working on. We’ve been speaking to the centre-forwards about staying between the posts and occupying defenders.

“I always tell our wingers that there’s goals at that back post, so it was great for DJ to pop up. I’m pleased for both of them.”

Johnnie also confirmed that Alex Pearce has picked up a groin problem.
