Narrow defeat for the Dons

A loss in the London derby

4 February 2023

AFC Wimbledon were made to pay for missed chances as we lost 1-0 to Sky Bet League Two leaders Leyton Orient.

In the end it was former Don George Moncur who struck the all decisive blow as he fired home midway through the second-half, however the outcome could have been all the more different had Ethan Chislett fired home after being put clean through just 10 minutes earlier.

Further half chances fell to the likes of Diallang Jaiyesimi and Josh Davison but ultimately clinical finishing and resolute defending saw our opponents win a game that was far from pretty on the eye.

We will be looking to bounce straight back next Saturday as we play host to Carlisle United at Plough Lane.

Johnnie Jackson named an unchanged team from our 1-0 victory over Stockport County. Whilst new signings Aaron Pierre and Jaiyesimi made the substitutes bench.

After a cagey first quarter Nik Tzanev made the first notable save of the game to keep out Kieran Sadlier’s angled drive. Ethan Chislett then fired wide up the other end as things started to open up.

Ali Al-Hamadi then came even closer to breaking the deadlock as he saw his low effort kept out by Lawrence Vigouroux before the half-time whistle.

Arguably the best chance of the game fell our way only in the second period as Chislett went clean through before firing over with the goal at his mercy. And not long after we were made to pay as Moncur danced his way into the area before firing into the far corner.

Jaiyesimi saw a shot blocked as we pushed for an equaliser. As stoppage time arrived Tzanev made a fantastic save to prevent Idris El Mizouni from increasing the home side’s lead. However his efforts mattered little as the hosts came away victorious.

AFC Wimbledon: Nik Tzanev, Lee Brown (Jack Currie), Alex Woodyard, Harry Pell (Saikou Janneh), Josh Davison, Ethan Chislett, Ali Al-Hamadi (Diallang Jaiyesimi), Alex Pearce, Armani Little, Huseyin Biler (Chris Gunter), Paul Kalambayi
