Ali: I’ve got a platform to shine

Striker’s first words after big move

13 January 2023

It hasn’t always been easy for Ali Al-Hamadi in pursuit of his footballing ambitions - but he certainly believes becoming a Don can take him to new heights.

In a journey that has taken him from Maysan to Merseyside, the Iraq-born striker has seen a lot for someone who turns 21 in March and is now determined to grasp his new opportunity with both hands.

“I’ve had quite a tough upbringing,” Ali explains. “In terms of family life and even with football – it’s been a big journey to get to this point and perhaps at times it hasn’t gone as well as I’ve wanted it to but I think I’ve now got a great platform from which I can hopefully shine.

“It’s been in the works for a few weeks now, so it’s great to get it finally sorted. I’m hungry to score goals. I look to do everything I can to help the team out. I’m buzzing to be onboard.”

Spells with Swansea City and Wycombe Wanderers have proven to be good learning experiences for our third addition of the window – however he admits that the choice to join Wimbledon is perhaps his boldest.

Nevertheless it was one he took after consulting those closest to him, with a host of glowing recommendations only serving as encouragement to make the move to Plough Lane.

“Everybody I’ve spoken to has given this club rave reviews, in particular about how good the fans are and the history of it. Chris Gunter played a big part in me coming here, I spoke to him a fair bit.

“It’s a big decision for me to come here at this point in my career. The club is on an upward trajectory and if we can get everyone to continue pushing in the right direction we can have a great end to the season.

“The manager’s reputation for developing young players was massive for me too. He’s ambitious and I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”
