County Dons

Looking back at our former trio

27 January 2023

Ahead of our Saturday meeting with Stockport County, we’ve delved into the history books to look back at a selection of players who have turned out for both clubs.

A former flying full-back for the Dons, Chris Hussey now plies his trade for the Hatters at Edgeley Park, having signed at the beginning of September.

He joined our reserve team in 2006 and was quickly handed a professional contract after impressing for our Under-19s. Fast forward three years and the Hammersmith-born defender was being touted for a big move up the leagues, with Coventry City eventually winning the race for his signature – initially bringing him in on loan before a permanent move.

After 65 appearances for the Sky Blues he returned to Kingsmeadow in 2013, playing a part in our survival season under the stewardship of Neal Ardley.

He then went on to take in spells with Burton Albion, Bury, Sheffield United, Swindon, Cheltenham Town and Port Vale.

Tom Elliott notched up seven goals in 42 outings for County as he gradually built up his career at senior level. The towering frontman would then head south to Cambridge United, where a profitable three years got him a move to Wimbledon.

Across a spell of 90 games he would play a key role in our promotion to League One during the 2015/16 season, forming part of a four-man strike force that also included the likes of Lyle Taylor, Adebayo Akinfenwa and Ade Azeez.

He is currently a free agent after playing for Millwall, Salford and Bradford City in more recent times.

An undisputed Stockport legend, Kevin Cooper scored 18 goals in over 150 games before making an £800,000 move to the Dons in 2001.

He achieved his best-ever goals tally during his only season with us, earning a Player of the Year award that was presented to him on the pitch at Molineux – the home of his next club, Wolverhampton Wanderers following a £1 million transfer to the West Midlands.

Spells with the likes of Cardiff City, Newport County and Neath preceded a coaching career that has taken him to Switzerland and Malaysia.
